You’re on vacation right? You’ve got to experience
the food; a vacation is not a vacation without tasting
the authentic Mexican food. In Playa del Carmen there
are no shortages of restaurants, in fact there are 75
total in the town. Some of the best are:
La Pesca – Located on 30th Avenue and Constituyentes,
they boast the best seafood in town, they’re open until
9pm, so get there early to sample great seafood!
Ah Cacao Chocolate Café – Located on 5th Avenue
and Constituyentes, this chocolate themed coffee shop
is famous for their brownies, espressos, and lattes.
Babes Noodles and Bar – These guys have 2 locations,
one on Calle 10 between 5th Avenue and 10th Avenue and
the other on 5th Avenue between Calle 26 and Calle 28.
They offer Thai noodles, lots of music, and lots of
beer.
HC Monterrey – Located on Calle 1 between 15th
Avenue and 20th Avenue, this is one of those out of
the way restaurants that you want to visit at least
once, both a butcher and a restaurant, the best dish
there is the Arrachera Nacional, which is a marinated
flank steak, served with a potato and half of an avocado.
La Cueva del Chango – Located on Calle 38 between
5th Avenue and the beach, they offer contemporary Mexican
cuisine set in a lush jungle garden.
El Oasis – Located at the Bali Club, they offer
a relaxing atmosphere and fresh seafood. With a wide
variety of Mexican seafood, battered shrimp tacos, huge
bowls of seafood soup, and delicious fried fish, you
definitely won’t go hungry at this place.
Dr. Taco – Located in the downtown area, these
guys serve great food with a fun and funky atmosphere.
They offer a superb salsa bar, a vegetarian menu, and
the only shrimp burger in Playa del Carmen.
If you happen to be out and about after the restaurants
close there are a number pizza and hot dog stands around
the town that stay open until 6am, when the bars and
clubs close, so there is no need to go hungry after
a night of dancing and drinking.
You’ve seen the sites, spent plenty of time at the
beach, and eaten the food, now it’s time to pick up
some souvenirs and knick-knacks. The shops along 5th
Avenue are sure to provide a plethora of shops selling
shirts, bracelets, and souvenirs, and because of Playa
del Carmen’s close proximity to Cuba, you can also pick
up a few of those coveted Cuban Cigars, just don’t get
caught by customs, and beware of imitations, Cuban cigars
are quite pricey and often the more common Mexican Cigar
is passed off as a Cuban. Playa del Carmen has some
supermarkets where you can pick up souvenirs or things
you may have forgotten, Comercial Mexicana Mega, Chedaui,
and Soriana are the local shopping markets, you can
also find Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club close by as well.
There are two shopping centers or malls, Centro Maya
and Plaza Las Americas have large supermarkets and multi-screen
theaters.
